Trump Administration to Distribute Partial Food Stamp Assistance in November

The US government announced it would offer limited aid to millions of food stamp recipients as the protracted budget impasse approached a record-breaking length.

Funding Cut Information

Amid growing anxiety for the nearly 42 million Americans enrolled in the food assistance program, the USDA indicated it would use reserve resources to sustain assistance, though at only 50% of the standard amount participants usually receive.

Money for the program legally ran out on the weekend due to the budget standoff, now in its 34th consecutive day with little indication of completion.

Legal Proceedings

The decision came in a court filing after earlier rejections to issue emergency funding on alleged legal grounds. A court had ruled the administration could not refuse program funds because of the shutdown.

Following the legal directive, the executive branch announced it would be "pleased" to provide emergency funding for the program.

Implementation Hurdles

Authorities suggested that benefits could commence by midweek, but stressed the need for additional direction from the courts on how to properly redirect funds for SNAP support.

  • Some states have stated it will take time or even extended time to issue funds to vulnerable households.
  • Extended lines have been observed at pantries across the United States.
  • In multiple locations, large venue areas were converted into distribution sites.

Local Crisis Responses

Multiple states, such as New York, Oregon, and Virginia, announced states of emergency to supply short-term funds for benefits. However, these allocations were anticipated to be a limited percentage of the regular national funding.

The government costs for SNAP total approximately $8 billion each month throughout the United States.
